New Hope for ROMA
Report by Pavol Strakansky

23rd of December 2004

Prague: The European Roma Rights Center welcomed the Resolution issued by the British House of Lords, stating that The British Immigration Department at Prague airport violated the International anti-discrimination covenants.

Roma is a minority of Asian origins immigrated to Europe in the 14th Century, they are about 12millions spread all over Europe, mainly in the Eastern side. Many Romanis claimed that they have been suffering continuous organized racial Discrimination.

The story began when two local reporters (One white and other Roma) were interrogated at the Prague airport by the British Immigration Councilors ,who refused to pass the ROMA report.
The European Roma Rights Center, Based in Budapest, immediately accused the British immigration      department of violating the International Human Rights.

But the London Court of appeal judged that this proceeding was a( Justified indirect discrimination), while the House of Lords declared that it was( Illegal Organized Discrimination). The Roma Rights organization declared that this last judgment means a world to the Romanis and other discriminated groups in Europe.

Branems Bleaz, the Legal Director of ERRC said:" this judgment is the most important one in the history of Roma because it was certified by a supreme court in a western country, that would enable it to be respected in all other countries and courts, specially the European Court".

But the Czech investigator Otokar Motigel said that:" Although I m so glad with the Resolution, But it should have been issued much earlier, It solves a problem that doesn't exist anymore( now Czech Republic is a part of the EU and that helps Czechs to travel freely), It is a shame for a multi-cultural country like Britain to conduct such Low-leveled discrimination against the Czech Romanis".

The British ministry of Internal Affairs had declared that those proceedings were not meant to discriminate any person, but designed to alarm those trying to misuse the immigration law.
