The Jordanian New Press Law abolishes "arresting Journalists"

14-December 2004

The Jordanian Cabinet finally approved the new(Press and Publishing) Law that grants the Journalists the right to gain access to all information and to deliver them properly to the public, it also ablished any "threating or arresting journalist" in case of legal misdemeanor that affects Public debate, and that Journalists have the right not to attend trials and be represented by their lawyers.

" Those modifications would help so much in developing the press law, as it is a huge step to enforce Press and Expression Freedom and enable Journalists to gain access to Information and enjoy freedom" said Mr. Tarek Al Momeni, Chairman of Syndicate's of Journalists.

Mr. Ezz El din agrees with what Mr. Momeni said, and declared that it is not obligatory for writers to return to the Main Press and Publishing department.

According to this new Law, Authorities can not block any publishing , Only National Security Court can in one case " It violated the terms of its given license.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights commented: "the Cabinet accepted the Code's project , the Parliament may aver it, But we hope that the Code would find its own way to Reality".
