Cairo on 8 May, 2008
The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information has condemned the resolution of the Moroccan auhtorities to terminate the broadcast of Al Gezaira spcae news was being brodacasted from the Moroccan capital, Rabat, considering this step as a balatant violation against the opinion and expresssion freedoms, it comes within the framework of the “Satellite Broadcast Regulations Document”, that was approved by the Arab information ministers, except Qatar.
Especially after the alleged pretexts announced by the Moroccan authorities that what happned is “ just suspension and not probhibition, pending to Gezira completence of the required procedures related to its legal and tehnical status with the Supreme Corporation for Visual Information”.
Gamal Eid the Executive Director of the network has confirmed his strong condmency to the Moroccan governmental decree, that just came after the statements of the prominent writer Mohamed Hassanin Haikal in his weekly program in the channel, in which the Moroccan ex-king, Hassan II spoke, considering what happened is “ a beginning of a stream of violations that will be following after the document of the Satellite Broadcasting Regulations, that aimed in the first place to impose a governmental domination over the different space channels.
Gezera Channel announced that it was prevented from broadcasting its Magarbi daily news program by the Moroccan auhtorities, without giving any clear reasons.
The technical manager of the Moroccan National Agency for communication legitimation, in a letter addressed to the Director of the Gezera Network Wadah Khafr that : “the permissions related to the usage of the portable land station, and the satellite broadcasting instrument and all of the broadcasting equipments installed on the transmittion vehicle were annuled.
This Moroccan step comes after similar steps taken by the Egyptian Government to put pressure on the space channels, through breaking in the office of Cairo News Company, which is one of the most important company that provids the equipments of the live broadcasting to the satellite stations, and confisicating five instruments, what is tightening the hold on the live broadcast opportunity for many of the space channels, such as Gezera Channel, Dubai, Qatar, French TV...etc”.
Three space channels broadcast operations were terminated earlier, they are: Hewar, Baraka, and Hekma”.
