HRinfo Completes its Fifth Training Session
Journalists and rights activists discuss tools to avoid articles of the Egyptian penal code limiting freedom of the press

Cairo, June 26, 2007

On Monday 25 June 2007, the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) competed its fifth training session for journalists and rights activists, on the internet and adhering to human rights standards in the press. The session was attended by 17 trainers.

The trainers discussed many issues such as the tools, which must be utilized to avoid ambiguous articles of the penal code used to send journalists to prison and to limit press freedoms.

Moreover, the participants' different ideological and cultural backgrounds contributed in providing a rich discussion on the political and ethical limits of journalistic writing as well as the way in which such writing could adhere to standards of human rights and the freedom of opinion and expression.

The participants in this session, demonstrated clear interest in learning how to launch press campaigns on the internet, which is considered to be one of the most effective instruments for peaceful protest and lately it has become an important source of information. Moreover, many trainers expressed their desire in administering a blog from a Katib project, which is managed by HRinfo.

In addition, trainers questioned the possibility of having other training sessions in different Egyptian governorates, aiming to improve press writing talent and documentation techniques for journalists and rights activists outside Cairo. The fifth training session was attended by seven trainers from outside Cairo.

The session covered the following subjects:
  • Definition of the internet and how to use it effectively, and a description of its importance to rights activists and - by Ahmed Gharbia, blogger and technology expert.
  • The origin of human rights movement and the obligatory nature of international covenants - by Mahmoud Qandeel, lawyer and human rights trainer.
  • Internet journalism and supporting freedom of thought and expression - Nora Younis, journalist, blogger and activist.
  • Using internet safely - by Ahmed Gharbia, blogger and technology expert
  • Basics of journalistic writing and respecting human rights standards - by Hossam el Hamalawy, journalist, blogger and rights activist.
  • Protecting non-syndicated journalists and bloggers - by Gamal Eid, lawyer and rights activist.
HRinfo is beginning its preparations for the sixth training session. It will be held in July 2007.
