Sudan: Lift the Ban on"Al- Sudany" Newspaper and Release Othman Mirghany
Cairo - 21 May 2007 The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemns the decision of the Sudanese government to ban "Al - Sudany (the Sudanese) Independent Newspaper" and arresting its editor -in -chef Mahgoub Orwa for two days, while the journalist Othman Mirghany still detained - since May 17, 2007- because he has written an article criticizes the Sudanese Minister of Justice. On Wednesday 16 /5/2007 noon, the Press Prosecution decided to ban "Al-Sudany (the Sudanese) Newspaper" by the term of Article 130 of the Sudanese Procedures Law [1991], after the Ministry of Justice has suited against the newspaper, according to Articles (159, 160, 66) of Press Law. Later, the newspaper's issue - date (Thursday 17 May) was confiscated from the press, the editor-in-Chef arrested for two days and the journalist Othman Mirghany still detained, because he has written an article criticizes the Minister of Justice because he declared false statements and called for his resignation. Moreover, the Public Prosecution in Sudan is obliged to respect the decisions of the Sudanese Judiciary and release Othman Mirghany, according to a court decision refused to imprison him for a second time. In a declaration by Gamal Eid the Executive Director of HRinfo, "you can not sacrifice freedom of opinion and expression in a case, which the Minister of Justice is one of its parties. Though in a country suffers from the spread of the phenomenon of punishment ignorance, freedom of opinion and expression is accordingly, an important substantial issue that must be defended". |
