Two referndums: May 2005 and March 2007
Thuggery, sexual harrasment and random detention
Tens of detainees and bloggers always opressed

Cairo 26 March 2007

Egyptian human rights organization condemned the repititious, dirty police-state procedures Egyptian security is taking against Egyptian political activists and bloggers. The activists and bloggers were heading to take part in a peaceful sit-in planned in objection to the referundum on constitutional amendments scheduled today. The sit-in was planned to take place on the eve of 25 March.

Once again, Cairo streets turned into a battlefield full of plain-clothed police. After a campaign of random stop-and-search of unlucky citizens who happened to walk these streets, State Security apparatus started arresting bloggers/activists after beating them and assaulting them with pepper spray, in addition to sexual molesition to which also foreign correspondents were subject, in addition to female activists. State Security decided to round up and kidnap the males, and sexually harassing the females.

Human rights organization signing this statement said: "the repitition of the same scenarion clearly reveals not only the brutality of police apparatus, but also the police-state that allowed sick police officers to practice their sickness against the activists, so that the government gets enough room to forge the referundum. It is the regular scenario for a state that does not shy from oppression and corruption."

Once again, the rights organizations stress that the series of crimes committed by this government will not go without punishment. A General Prosecution used to overlooking the crimes of police officers will not help. It may be that the involvement of the Public Prosecution in the events of the May 2005 referundum, not pressing charges until today, has encouraged police officers to repeat the same, dirty practices in the referundum of April 2007.
