A Life in Danger
After 3 Weeks of Detention and Torture
The Ministry of Interior refuses to provide Al-Sharqawi with urgent medical care

Cairo - 15 June 2006

Cairo, 15 June 2006 - In a communiqué submitted today to the public prosecutor, the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) holds the Ministry of Interior totally responsible for the life and health condition of prisoner of opinion Mohammad Al-Sharqawi.

HRinfo demands the public prosecutor to obligate the Ministry of Interior to allow Al-Sharqawi to be admitted to a hospital where he could receive the necessary medical care for his injuries that resulted from torture, particularly those injuries in his hips and left arm.

Al-Sharqawi was detained in 25 May along with Karim Al-Sha'er. Al-Shraqawi has been subject to violent torture and abuse on the hands of police officers in Qasr El-Nil police station that caused him several injuries in different parts of his body.

Though the public prosecutor had examined the physical effects on al-Sharqawi's body, it took the Ministry of Interior 3 days to adhere to the public prosecutor's decision to refer Al-Sharqawi to forensic medical examination. Since then, the Ministry of Interior obstinately insists on denying that Al-Sharqawi has been tortured, and also denies him the necessary medical care, including his urgent need to cure his left arm.

Some prison officers, where Al-Sharqawi is detained, told his friends and HRinfo's representative that they are doing their best to help him to be allowed to see the prison doctor, and that admitting him in a hospital requires an approval from the Ministry of Interior, which could not be obtained until now.

"In addition to the prosecutor's refusal to fulfill Al-Sharqawi's demand to be submitted to a magistrate, and the fact that the officers who are charged of practicing torture against him have not been investigated with, the Ministry of Interior now denies him urgent medical care. His life is in real danger, and no body knows to whom he shall resort?" said Gamal Eid, HRinfo's executive director.

"Today we have submitted a communiqué to the public prosecutor demanding it to obligate the interior to provide Al-Sharqawi with the required medical care. We doubt about the prosecutor's response, especially when it becomes clear that all the state's bodies are colluding against Mohammad Al-Sharqawi, for no reason except him being responsible for shedding light on brutal police practices against innocent citizens, who, in their turn have not committed any crimes except peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression" Added Eid

HRinfo calls upon local and international civil society to exert pressures on the Egyptian government in order to rescue Al-Sharqawi's life which is in continuously increasing danger.
