Life in Danger
A young man arrested for his articles on the internet and detained in an unknown place 6 November 2005 Cairo, 6 2005 - The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRINFO) condemned today the Ministry of Interior for arresting of Abdel Karim Nabil Suliman. Since his detention last 26 October, officials have not put forward an accusation or announced his place of detention. Accordingly, HRINFO demands his immediate release. State security force has broke into the residence of Abdel Karim Suliman, known as Karim Amer, and arrested him for his articles published on news websites in addition to his own personal blog. He was taken to an unknown place. Abdel Karim is 21 years old and studies law in Al-Azhar University, Damanhour branch. According to one of the bloggers who visited his home, Abdel Karim could be in one of the detention centres near Alexandria or at the State Security headquarter known as al-Fara'na (The Pharoahs), which is infamous for torture practices against prisoners. "State Security authorities should announce the reasons behind the arrest of Abdel Karim Suliman and his place of detention," Gamal Eid, HRINFO Director, said. "Authorities should immediately release him or hand him to the general prosecutor if there are any accusations against him," he asserted. Eid Added that Abdel Karim's disappearance in such a manner raises fear of him being exposed to torture, which is known to be practiced by State Security authorities against prisoners and detainees. Some Egyptian bloggers have stated that Abdel Karim Suliman's writings following the last incidents in Alexandria, which raised reservations amongst conservatives, could be the main reason for his arrest, especially that Abdel Karim's brother told one of the bloggers that the authorities have confiscated some of his articles while arresting him. HRINFO is sorry to see that a young man whose only crime is his writings on the Internet should be exposed to such terrorising practices, deprived from contacting his family or his lawyer and detained in unknown place.
