Academic Freedoms
Amman Center issues its first report on monitoring academic freedoms in the Arabic universities for May and June 2007. The report determines the security conditions and the instability witnessed in some Arab world countries, which led to the rapid and increase percentage of scientists immigrated abroad in addition to killing them. Moreover, the ill political and security conditions and the role of occupiers in destroying the infrastructure and creating financial and abstract obstacles upon scientific research and academic life in the countries suffered from occupation and its policies, in addition to the reflections on the academic process and university life for both students and lecturers.

    Bahrain
    ========
    International Justice Unemployed and Low Waged Committee and Bahrain Youth Association for Human Rights turned to the International Work Organization, after consuming all local ways to solve unemployed problems in Bahrain. The release of Bahrain Youth Association for Human Rights states that the association will bring documents around the unemployed problems to the International Work Organization determines the subjects (insurance law against unemployment, low waged unemployed).

    Saudi Arabia
    ========
    Release
    The Saudi Arabian authorities freed on bail Dr. Abd Allah el Hamed and his brother Eissa el Hamed members of the constitutional reformation movement in Saudi Arabia, after a short term arrest including for the first time since years arresting five women, then they were released by the Saudi Arabian government. The arrest reason was due to a sit-in organized by 15 women and 7 children, refusing arresting their kindred without prosecution. The institute for amicably order broke up the sit-in, arrested the women and transferred them to Al-Safra Prison before the investigation arrested the other five women.

    Syria

    Prosecutions
    This week witnessed fake extensible convictions such as insulting the president of the republic, science and the national slogan, urging on disputes between sects and the country's different origins. In addition to insulting an officer while doing his work and defamations against the president, courts, the organizing institutions, army and administrations. As a background to all these convictions, the hearing and prosecution sessions of kamal el Labouany, Mahmoud Sarem, Faeq Ali Asaad (Faeq el Meir), Fateh Gamus and others are continuing.

    Hostage
    An opposition activist's son is still under the authority of the political security, although he doesn't practice any opposing political activity and some predicts that he has been arrested because his father refused to apologize for the authorities to give him permission to return to Syria.

    Opinion and Expression
    The Syrian government freed the Syrian journalist Anwar el Satea after five years in prison, however the security apparatuses issued a brief prevents him from traveling abroad.

    Palestine
    ========
    The National Association for Democracy issued a release describing the critical situation in Rafah land crossing point and calling the international society and human rights organizations to take on their burden the ethical and human responsibility to solve the crisis of thousands of Palestinians stripped out from their homes because the crossing point is closed and they are living a hard life in difficult circumstances with lack of bare necessities, hot weather, lack of proper food or conveniences especially for the sick. The release added that these procedures are an embodiment to the policy of collective punishment still practiced on the Palestinians and it contradicts with the terms of the human international law, in addition it predicts with the occurrence of a human disaster, which could happen if the crossing point still closed. Moreover, the condition of the sick will deteriorate more due to lack of food, medicine and conveniences (place for shelter or sleep) and it will lead to the increase in death cases between them.

    Libya

    Death Penalty
    The Libyan Alliance for Human Rights issued a release welcoming the high court's decision to replace the death penalty verdict in the case of Ben Ghazy children carrying the HIV Aids virus. The release also declares the alliance's constant situation concerning death penalty, which is demanding death penalty's total elimination and complete removal from Libyan legislations, because it doesn't respect the right to life. Moreover, the release asks when will start the prosecution of the responsible officials in health sector, after the prosecution of the Bulgarian medical team have finished.

    On the same context, Amnesty International issued a release stating the organization's relief for ending death penalty threats, which was pursuing medical officials for a long time. While unfortunately, we feel disappointed for the defendants who will still jailed for a life -long imprisonment.

    Egypt

    Prisoners
    Maat for Juridical and Constitutional Studies issued a release, which state the condition of prisoners inside Egyptian prisons and presented a detailed description to one of the cases. The release described the case of the father of the girl Salsabil whose father was subjected to torture, and it says that we are all responsible for Salsabil's destiny, in which we didn't do any act to save the father or prosecute the defendants.

    Exchanging Information
    Horriya Center for Political Rights and Supporting Democracy issued a release warning about one of the disasters of our government, in which it decided to minimize internet subscription to L.E 45 instead of L.E 95. The government's conspiracy was obviously clear in the followed clauses of the decision, in which they mean by this to minimize usage hours, in which the user who subscribed will use the internet for only 2 hours daily. This decision also let the serving companies to present different types of services, in which they will present more than 2 hours usage and downloads with a different price, which will be more expensive than the current subscribed price.

    Morocco
    ========
    The Moroccan Association for Human Rights, which is driving a campaign since last May to release the prisoners in the anniversary of workers day and other prisoners were calling for freedom for their colleagues, issued a release denouncing arresting two of its members inside a coach by a security officer, in which they were discussing the case of 2007 Fateh May arrests. Moreover the release state that this act clears out the authorities' grave abuse, its blatant interference in citizens' right to transport and expressing opinion and expression and violating international covenants for human rights, especially the international covenant for political and civil rights. In addition, the association calls for punishing the police officer who exceeded his duties defined by the law and it is preparing for the second campaign with the slogan "freedom for opinion prisoners in Akadir, El Qasr El Kabir, Beny Melal and all political prisoners", in a reality characterized by the increase in the cases of curbing freedoms and violating human rights by all its means.

    Opinion and Expression
    Reporters Without Boarders (RSF) issued a release describing the condition of Al-Watan Newsletter editor- in - chef Abd el Rehim Ariry and the journalist Mostafa Haram Allah, in which they are put under strict supervision and investigated for publishing an official document, and in its release, RSF is calling for freeing immediately the two, in which the document published in the newsletter doesn't clear out any secret information.
