Bahrain

Opinion and Expression
Preventing an assembly under the title "counter the Bahraini prime minister", in which some political, religious and rights activists encouraged citizens to protest against a favoring price under the title "human development and housing" given to the Bahraini prime minister by the UN. The assembly had decided to start from a mosque held in Manama and finish near the UN building. Moreover, the Bahraini security forces prevented the journalists from taking photos of the incidents wide spread in many places and the intelligence apparatus arrested Al-Aalam TV station reporter Zeinab abd el Naby, the photographer and an attendant.

    Tunisia
    ========
    Siege
    The Tunisian security forces held a siege on the working place of the Democratic Association for Work and Freedoms and prevented many activists from participating in a seminar on freedom of belief, in which they were violently assaulted without reasons, while the forces gave access to other participants.

    Just Prosecution
    Head of second criminal constituency court in the Court of First Instance prevented a lawyer from pleading, under the pretense that he has no right to discuss the conviction decision, which the defendants were accordingly transferred to the criminal constituency. Moreover, he ordered the security forces to get the lawyer out of the session by force, while the other lawyers existed in the court remained. The judge in addition, adjourned the session without enabling the other lawyers from pleading and the court issued harsh verdicts on the defendants.

    The Tunisian Alliance for Human Rights issued a release on this incident, calling for providing legal guarantees for defendants prosecuted on the basis of Terrorism Law, respecting the defendants' rights including their psychological and physical safety, their right to defend themselves and entrusting lawyers to attend their sessions in all judicial institutions. In addition to respecting their dignity in both security centers and prisons, permitting visits by family and lawyers without restrictions and respecting the basic rules of a just prosecution.

    Disappointment
    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) issued a release expressing its disappointment for the meeting held between the Tunisian ambassador in Cairo and Dr. Botros Ghaly, Head of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) in Egypt. The meeting discussed the cooperation in human rights field between NCHR in Egypt and the High Institute for Human Rights, regarding NCHR's conference held in the beginning of December 2007 on the subject democracy and human rights in Africa. On the other hand, the meeting ignored the severe violent acts done by the Tunisian government against journalists and human rights activists in Tunisia on June 2007.

    Just Prosecution
    Human Rights Watch issued a report determines the systematic torture acts done by Kurdistan security forces - Northern Iraq against detainees, and denying their principal right to a just prosecution.

    Opinion and Expression
    Press Freedoms Observatory issued two separate releases; the first determines the assassination of "Baghdad" satellite station's reporter by anonymous armed men, in Al-Gamaa district - west Baghdad. While the second release determines arresting the reporters of "Sawa" radio and "el Somaria" TV station in Babel governorate, by the Iraqi security forces, it was after being violated by the governorate council building's security men.

    Protecting Civilians
    Balance Center for Human Rights issued a release on the occupation forces escalation of assassination processes against Palestinian activists and the continuous air raiding on civil buildings located in crowd areas, in addition to its unacceptable discarding to its obligations as an occupation country, to respect rules of human rights law, which denies assaults on civilians, murdering on purpose and assassination.

    Human Rights Watch issued on detail the same issue in its report on the Palestinian air raids attacks on the Israeli countries and the Israeli bombing near the crowd areas in North Ghaza, which leads to many injuries beyond civilians since (September 2005), which is considered a severe violation to war laws. The 121 pages report under the title "random bombing: Palestinian air raids attacks on Israel and the Israeli bombings on Gaza Strip", revealed the fact that all Palestinian armed groups and Israeli army didn't give enough concern to the life of civilians.

    Protecting Civilians
    The Palestinian Association for Human Rights (Rasid) issued a report on its field visit to "Al-Bedawy" camp in North Lebanon, it describes the living conditions of the Palestinian immigrants escaping from the horrible fights happening between the Lebanese army and "Fath Al-Islam" group, in which this group attacked the Lebanese army and in return, the Lebanese army fired on some demonstrations ends with the death of two citizens and injuring many more. Man Friends International Organization issued a release on the same subject this week.

    Arrest
    Amnesty International issued a release calling the Libyan government to open a just, non bias and an independent investigation for 12 defendants convicted of planning for a demonstration against the authorities (on February 2007), in which two of them at least, according to reports, were tortured, and guarantee a fair prosecution for them.

    The Libyan Alliance for Human Rights presented a letter to the Libyan Justice Minister, in the second anniversary of the Libyan journalist el Said Deif el Ghazal's assassination, calling him for publishing a detailed report on the procedural and legal steps done by the government to fix the crime's file and bring the defendants to a public just prosecution.

    Freedom of Belief
    The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights issued a release welcoming the decision of appeal investigation constituency in the High Administrative Court, for accepting the hearing of the Christian citizens' right to return to their origin religion Christianity after being Muslims. The beginning of September 2007 will be the date of the session for appeal hearing.

    The Initiative in its release, said that the court's verdict is a step on the right direction, adding that it hopes that the High Administrative Court issue its verdict on the appeal in favor of freedom of belief principle and countering discrimination, guaranteed by the Constitution and the international law.

    Opinion and Expression
    Committee to Protect Journalists issued a report under the title "the Moroccan Front", state that the Moroccan authorities work on a distinguished system to impose its judicial and financial authority on independent press freedom. Though in the series of judicial pursuits on political consideration background during the past two years, a huge fine was imposed on at least five Moroccan journalists, prison verdicts with arrest of judgment against five journalists and an a decree issued to prevent a journalist from doing his profession.

    Unjust Verdicts
    The Moroccan Association for Human Rights central office issued a release condemning the verdicts of Beny Melal Court of First Instance against the activists joining liability with Fateh May prisoners, in which it issued a verdict against the 72 years old activist Mohamed Bokreen, one of the founders of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights. The central office condemned the final verdicts of Beny Melal Court of First Instance issued by Akadeer Misdemeanor Court against Fateh May prisoners, El Mahdy Beryoshy and Abd el Rahim Qarad, the two subjected to two years in prison and a fine of 10,000 Dirham. Finally, the release states that these unfair verdicts are based on unjust prosecutions, held to curb activists and violate freedom of opinion and expression, the central office also calls for releasing Akadeer, Al-Qasr al- Kabeer and Beny Melal prisoners and all political prisoners.

    Yemen

    Just Prosecution
    Sisters' Arabic Forum for Human Rights issued a release expressing its deep anxiousness for the journalists and rights and political activist Abd el Karim el Kheiwany continues arrest and the deterioration in his health status. El Kheiwany's arrest and being taken to the criminal prosecution, which has a reputation between lawyers of its unconstitutionality, it only investigated on written and published articles or draft articles non- published and confiscated from his home while arresting him, in which all his writing instruments were confiscated including his laptop and he was prevented from visits. These violations clear out a drawback in freedom of opinion and expression in Yemen. The forum accordingly, has presented a public invitation to all civil society organizations, rights and political activists, media workers and citizens to join liability with opinion prisoner Abd el Karim el Kheiwany.

    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) issued a release calling the Yemeni government to release the Yemeni journalist Abd el Karim el Kheiwany, arrested violently ten days ago from his home, in which the public prosecution in the beginning convicted him of joining a group belongs to the Huthis, then the conviction amended to supporting the Huthis beliefs.
