The Weekly Update for HRINFO, no. 148
Fourth year 9 February 2007 - 15 February 2007 Tunisia ======== Security Pursuits Tunisian League for Human Rights issued four press releases this week on the security harassments suffered by Al-Taher Bel-Hussein, director of Al-Hewar Al-Tunisi satellite TV and editor of Afaq Tunisiya website. Reporters without Borders also condemned these harassments in a separate alert. The League also reported, this week, on various violations committed against former political prisoners. The fourth press release issued by the league tackled the story of General Writer of Secondary Education Syndicate who has expelled from his work. Collective Violations The International Association for Political Prisoners issued two press releases, this week. The first pres release handled the case of the political prisoner Abdel Latif Bougehila who decided to continue his open hunger strike since November 2006. His sole demand is to get released. The other press release is about the kidnapping of the daughter of former political prisoner Kabeel Al-Nasery by security service. The Arabic Program also reported on the same topic and condemned the broad campaign of arresting activists. Some of them ended up with putting political activists to death. Journalists: Iraq Association to Defend Journalists issued two press releases, this week. The first press release condemned the assassination of Al-Safeer newspaper editor in Baghdad. The other press release documented the comprehensive investigations conducted by US forces regarding the murder of journalist Sohad Shaker El-Kenanay. Security Disorder Despite the signing of Mecca agreement between Fateh and Hamas, security disorder is still prevailing the whole scene in Palestine. National Association for Democracy and Law issued two press releases on this loose. The league seeks to launch a peaceful assembly in Martyrs Square in Tripoli on Saturday 17 February 2007 to celebrate the first anniversary of the murder of demonstrators. Sources More information on Libya page: http://www.hrinfo.net/libya/ ========================== Egypt ======== Military Trial Cairo Institute for Human Rights, Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, and Arab Center for Democracy and Human Rights issued three separate press releases to condemn the practices of the government. The Egyptian authorities referred 40 leaders from Muslim Brotherhood group to military trial. Constitutional amendments Several human rights organizations joined the call of the government upon citizens to give their opinion - only their opinion - in the constitutional amendments. These organizations apparently forgot that those who are doing these amendments have failed before to amend article 76. Attacks on Al-Aqsa 19 Egyptian human rights organizations discussed the attacks by Israeli forces against Al-Aqsa Mosque. Kafer Turkey fears cancer and police suppression A woman went to ask a policeman, why he arrested her son. The policeman replied by slapping her face and letting her fell unconscious. When one of her relatives approached to rescue her, the policeman shot his leg. This is one of the several scenes of violence practiced by policemen against civilians in Egypt. Moroccan Organization for Human Rights arranged a round table seminar on the public utilities and economic rights in Association Bar. Sources More information on Regional and International page: http://www.hrinfo.net/mena ========================== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information ======== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information issued a press release to express its astonishment by the practices of Dr. Abdul Fatah Mourad, Judge and Head of Alexandria Appeal Court. Dr. Mourad recently published a book titled "Scientific and Legal Principles of Blogs" which includes more than 50 pages copied from HRinfo report titled "Implacable Adversaries: Arab Governments and the Internet" and published on 13 December 2006. The judge's book includes no reference to sources and does not even mention that the subject is quoted. The Intellectual Property Protection Act defines the doer of such actions with a name which we consider Dr. Mourad is high above. A Moroccan citizen who is working as a journalist and a teacher complained that he is suffering intimidation and harassments because of his writings published in Al-Ahdath newspaper.
