Fourth year 26 January 2007 - 1 February 2007 Bahrain ======== Two detainees face prison sentence Bahrain Center for Human Rights launched a campaign to call for the release of two activists who will be trialed on 31 January. They face up to seven years in prison, for holding printouts from the World Wide Web. Sources More information on Bahrain page: http://www.hrinfo.net/bahrain/ ========================== Tunisia ======== Freedom of Expression IFEX-TMG wrote an open letter to the Tunisian president to express its deep concerns towards not allowing Dar Al-Sabah Publishing House to publish the weekly "L'expression" and distribute the French magazine "Historia Thematic". The International Association for Political Prisoners and the National Council of Freedoms issued two separate press releases on the harassments suffered by the lawyer and activists Mohamed Abou at Le Kef prison. Sources More information on Tunisia page: http://www.hrinfo.net/tunisia ========================== Saudi Arabia ======== A prisoner claim that he is psycho "Let's stand hand in hand for the release of Hadi Al Latif and confront the sectarian discrimination in Saudi Arabia," a call announced by the Arabic Commission for Human Rights at the end of a press release on the prisoner who has been detained for 15 years up till now for saying a sentence which may be understood as defaming Islam. The Arabic Organization for Human Rights in Syria called for eliminating these chaotic processes and holding those who are responsible accountable. Ahwaz The Arabic Organization for Human Rights in Syria also condemned the severe violations of human rights practiced by the Iranian government in against the Arab Ahwazi people. A call for strike The Arabic Organization for Human Rights in Syria reported on the strike to be launched before Syrian organization in London on Saturday 10 February 2007 to protest on the ongoing arrests, exceptional courts, and regime corruption, and violations against Kurdish people. Other armed group kidnapped another journalist from Al-Da'wa magazine. The press releases clarify that this is based on the dangerous Israeli escalation in Gaza, and using illegitimate weapons against civilians. The petition also calls for providing international protection for journalists and media staff and to defend the freedom of expression. Khairat Al-Shater and his companions, Freedom Center for Political Rights and Democracy send a salute to the independent judge who insisted on reciting the sentence of release to the public. In order not to let them go unpunished 12 human rights organizations in addition to individual activists formed a coalition to monitor the criminal elections in the case of Mohamed Abdul Qader El-Sayed who has been murdered out of torture by electric wire. The trial of the State Security officer who committed this crime, Ashraf Mustafa Hussein Safwat shall be held on Saturday 3 February 2007. Unjustified Violence El-Ganob Center for Human Rights called upon the authorities to announce the results of the investigations into the miserable incidents which took place in Kafer Turky in Giza governorate. The center also called upon the Ministry of Interior to adhere to the international standards in dealing with public assembly and not to rush in using power. Nowadays, Shura Council is preparing the list to submit to the House of Representatives which will be subsequently filed to the president. The members of the meeting called for representing the civil society and woman in the said authority. The trial began on January 25 of `Abd al-Karim Nabil Suleiman, better known by his pen name Karim Amer, the first Egyptian blogger to be tried for the contents of his blog. He faces up to nine years in prison. Amnesty International Amnesty International issued two press releases to call upon the Israeli government to handle the detailed maps of the areas located in southern Lebanon. It also warned the African Union that it will harm its own reputation if Sudan was elected to head position this year. Sources More information on Regional and International page: http://www.hrinfo.net/mena ========================== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information ======== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) and Arab Program for Human Rights Activists (APHRA) condemn the prevention of Mohamed Al-Maskati, human rights activist and Director of Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights (BYSHR) from entering Egypt today. The Cairo Airport Security Service held Al-Maskati in custody for more than 12 hours at the airport before he was deported back to Bahrain.
