Fourth year 19 January 2007 - 25 January 2007 Tunisia ======== Unfair Trial Three citizens convicted with practicing terrorism were sentenced to 11 years in prison and 10 years under administrative censorship. The three prisoners were arrested in 2005. The National Council of Liberties issued a press release to condemn the trial which lacked the essential conditions of fairness. Those who encouraged the holding of conference in Tunisia, including the former general secretary of United Nations, said: "It is a good opportunity for the Tunisian government to handle different human rights issues, including the topics related to freedom of expression. However, one year latter the general secretary of Norwegian Pen organization and chairman of TMG said that he is sorry that the situation of freedom of expression in Tunisia in the beginning of 2007. He attempted several times to commit suicide and hunger strike, as a result of putting him into a solitary confinement. Criminal Court The first and second degree criminal court held two sessions to trial detained activists, whom their trial was postponed to next February. At the same moment the British forces arrested another journalist southern Basra for the same reason. Rafah Crossing National Association for Democracy and Law issued a press release to condemn the ongoing closure of Rafah crossing and considered this a severe violation of human rights. The Association also called upon the international civil community to interfere to re-open Rafah crossing. Darfur 32 regional and international human rights organizations welcomed the resolution of UN secretary general that eliminating violence in Darfur will be his basic priority. Detention Eight human rights organizations issued a joint press release to condemn the policy of detaining citizens by the ministry of interior. Moroccan Forum for Truth and Justice invite activists to attend the celebrations to be hold in the anniversary of January 1984 incidents. The slogan is "in order not to do it again!" The Committee to Protect Journalists also issued a press release on the Moroccan publisher who resigned to protect his newspaper from paying damages. Reporters without Borders renewed its call for freeing journalist and writer Michael Kilo whose trial is postponed from 23 January 2007 to 19 February 2007. Sources More information on regional and international page: http://www.hrinfo.net/mena ========================== The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information ======== Reporters Without Borders and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information wrote to justice minister Mamdouh Marei today asking him to intercede on behalf of Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman (better known by his blogger pseudonym of Kareem Amer), whose trial is due to start on 25 January in Alexandria. Held since 6 November, he faces up to nine years in prison for posting articles critical of Islam on his blog To read the press release: http://www.hrinfo.net/en/reports/2007/pr0122.shtml Covering up Torture is the Crime; and not disclosing it, the accusations leveled against Al-Jazeera journalist are illegal. The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemns the investigation with Howayda Taha, Al-Jazeera TV Journalist. Taha is accused of possessing footages documenting torture in Egypt in order to be shown in a TV show by Al-Jazeera. Security forces confiscated the videotapes while Taha was on her way to Doha, Qatar last week.
