Tunisia

Unfair Trial

Three citizens convicted with practicing terrorism were sentenced to 11 years in prison and 10 years under administrative censorship. The three prisoners were arrested in 2005. The National Council of Liberties issued a press release to condemn the trial which lacked the essential conditions of fairness.

Freedom of Expression

TMG IFEX members issued a press release to celebrate the first anniversary of hosting the World Summit of Information Society under the supervision of United Nations in Tunisia. Those who encouraged the holding of conference in Tunisia, including the former general secretary of United Nations, said: "It is a good opportunity for the Tunisian government to handle different human rights issues, including the topics related to freedom of expression. However, one year latter the general secretary of Norwegian Pen organization and chairman of TMG said that he is sorry that the situation of freedom of expression in Tunisia in the beginning of 2007.

    Saudi Arabia
    ========
    More harassment against a prisoner who claimed that he is a psychological patient

    Mahdy Ben Saeed Ben Hamad Al Matif spent more than fifteen years in prison for uttering a few words which were understood as defaming religion. He attempted several times to commit suicide and hunger strike, as a result of putting him into a solitary confinement.

    Detention

    More activists were detained this week, in addition to the son of one of those who were expelled forty years ago.

    Criminal Court

    The first and second degree criminal court held two sessions to trial detained activists, whom their trial was postponed to next February.

    Journalists

    Iraqi police arrested the cameraman and reporter of Al-Alam TV while they were covering the bombing blast in Quariya northern Iraq. At the same moment the British forces arrested another journalist southern Basra for the same reason.

    Media freedom

    MADA center and National Association for Democracy and Law condemned the attacks which targeted Al-Arabiya TV headquarter.

    Rafah Crossing

    National Association for Democracy and Law issued a press release to condemn the ongoing closure of Rafah crossing and considered this a severe violation of human rights. The Association also called upon the international civil community to interfere to re-open Rafah crossing.

    Freedom of Expression

    Reporters without Borders wrote an open letter to the Lebanese minister of information to call upon him to do his best to release New TV reporters who have been detained since 19 December 2006.

    Strike

    The Coordinating Committee of Syndicate Rights and Freedoms issued six press releases on the strike of railway laborers.

    Darfur

    32 regional and international human rights organizations welcomed the resolution of UN secretary general that eliminating violence in Darfur will be his basic priority.

    Detention

    Eight human rights organizations issued a joint press release to condemn the policy of detaining citizens by the ministry of interior.

    Journalists without Borders issued its annual report on journalistic freedoms in Yemen in 2006.

    National Organization for Defending Rights and Freedoms issued three press releases on the situation of prisoners in Guantanamo, calling for releasing two detainees or trialing them, and an open letter to the Yemeni public prosecutor to call for protecting the witnesses of a criminal case.

    Freedom of Expression

    Arab Commission for Human Rights issued a press release on the situation of freedom to use the internet in Oman. The Committee to Protect Journalists also issued a press release on the Moroccan publisher who resigned to protect his newspaper from paying damages. Reporters without Borders renewed its call for freeing journalist and writer Michael Kilo whose trial is postponed from 23 January 2007 to 19 February 2007.

    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information

    Reporters Without Borders and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information wrote to justice minister Mamdouh Marei today asking him to intercede on behalf of Abdel Kareem Nabil Suleiman (better known by his blogger pseudonym of Kareem Amer), whose trial is due to start on 25 January in Alexandria. Held since 6 November, he faces up to nine years in prison for posting articles critical of Islam on his blog

    Covering up Torture is the Crime; and not disclosing it, the accusations leveled against Al-Jazeera journalist are illegal.

    The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (HRinfo) condemns the investigation with Howayda Taha, Al-Jazeera TV Journalist. Taha is accused of possessing footages documenting torture in Egypt in order to be shown in a TV show by Al-Jazeera. Security forces confiscated the videotapes while Taha was on her way to Doha, Qatar last week.
