In solidarity with Arab network for human rights information
Concerning judge Abdel Fattah Murad's quoting 50 pages of its report without reference The undersigned organizations express their solidarity with the demands of the Arab network for human rights information addressed to Egyptian judges for its redress concerning the practices of Dr. Abdul Fatah Mourad, Judge and Head of Alexandria Appeal Court. Dr. Mourad who recently published a book titled "Scientific and Legal Principles of Blogs" which includes more than 50 pages copied from HRinfo report titled "Implacable Adversaries: Arab Governments and the Internet" and published on 13 December 2006, without reference to sources , as dictated by Intellectual Property Protection Act no. 82/2002. We highly appreciate and estimate the fact that researchers and men of the judiciary are using research and references published by civil society organizations active in the field of human rights. We consider this a testimony to the professionalism of those organizations which believe that professionalism and ethical conduct in addressing, documentation and dissemination of information are basic requirements for their credibility and the credibility of their work. It is therefore that we call upon Judge Abdul Fatah Mourad to correct the situation and enlist the references he used in his book. We feel this is crucial as a sign of respect for the ethics of writing and publishing, as well as for the law, which he is one of the people entrusted with, especially that the lack of reference to the source of the quote, HRinfo, does not only violate the rights of the organization, but also harms its reputation and its stand in support of human rights, when those information is used in a way contrary to the objectives for which they were released. We also call upon the honorable judges of Egypt to intervene and take necessary measures to prevent the repetition of similar actions. We join the position of HRinfo, that we shall accept their decision. This statement is endorsed by (in alphabetical order)
